Ammar completed his medical training in Sweden, undertaking advanced fellowships in liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease at Karolinska University Hospital, one of Europe’s most prestigious medical centres. He completed a PhD in collaboration with McMaster University, Canada. He then pursued a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in medical epidemiology and biostatistics at Karolinska Institute.
Since relocating to Australia in 2016, Ammar has held a substantial appointment in the Gastroenterology Unit at The Alfred Hospital, where he consults on patients with a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver conditions. He performs endoscopic procedures and is actively involved in the training and mentorship of medical students and junior doctors.
Ammar is also a dedicated academic and researcher, with an appointment at Monash University. He has published over 80 papers in high-impact medical journals and has supervised several PhD students. His research focuses on liver disease, gastrointestinal epidemiology, and innovative approaches to managing gastrointestinal bleeding.
