A/Prof Gregor Brown is a physician gastroenterologist and hepatologist who combines public practice as Head of Endoscopy at The Alfred Hospital with a private Gastroenterology practice in inner Melbourne. His main interests are in luminal gastroenterology, and the endoscopic management of these conditions, including interventional gastroscopy/colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy. He consults from private rooms in Prahran.
A/Prof Brown trained in Medicine at Melbourne University and obtained his FRACP in Gastroenterology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He subsequently obtained a basic science PhD at Flinders University, Adelaide, before completing an Endoscopy Fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital, London. He returned to a combined position in the departments of Gastroenterology and Colorectal Medicine and Genetics at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2004, before moving to The Alfred as Head of Endoscopy in 2007.
He was appointed Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology (Monash University) in 2012, and is currently on the Clinical Working Group of the National Bowel Cancer Surveillance Program as well as the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in GI Endoscopy. He was on the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association Executive (AGEA) for 8 years from 2005, including as Chair (2009-2013), and was also on the Council of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA; 2009-2013). He is active in colonoscopy training in Australia as one of the instigators and developers of the current National Endoscopy Training Initiative (NETI) program, and is a member of the inaugural NETI Committee. His current research interests include colonoscopic polypectomy, bowel preparation optimization, capsule endoscopy, and new treatments for coeliac disease.
A/Prof Brown is passionate about quality endoscopy, particularly colonoscopy, and regularly convenes and demonstrates at national workshops for the benefit of trainees and peers. Difficult colonoscopy, the endoscopic removal of large, complex polyps, and the investigation and management of coeliac disease and GI bleeding and iron deficiency anaemia are areas of particular interest to him. He is married with four children.
